God’s Control

Dear Church Family,

For your enjoyment and reflection would you please get your Bible and read Psalm 4 with me?

It is interesting to me how much the world has changed over the millennia since this Psalm was written: the accumulation of much knowledge, a plethora of scientific learning. Added to all of this (some would say because of these things) we live longer, are more healthy than past generations and our level of living comfort is unparalleled in the history of mankind.

In the light of our exposure to this current trouble, it would seem to me the Lord is exposing the hubris of mankind once again. The truth we are forced to discover here in 2020 is that we are not in control of much of anything. Oh, we think we can control the whole of creation, while at the same time we are scared to death of a virus so small it cannot be seen. The Psalmist brings this very thing to our attention in Vs. 2

O sons of men, how long will my honor become a reproach?
How long will you love what is worthless and aim at deception?

For those who trust in the mighty loving hand of the Lord, the One who is active in the affairs of all mankind, there comes a certain peace in trusting in His care during these times. We are reminded that we are set apart for His special concern. Look again at Vs. 3-6

3 But know that the Lord has set apart the godly man for Himself;
The Lord hears when I call to Him.

Tremble, and do not sin;

Meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still. Selah.
5 Offer the sacrifices of righteousness,
And trust in the Lord.

6 Many are saying, “Who will show us any good?”
Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O Lord!

Do you know what is said here about the one to whom the Lord turns his face? The one who turns to the Lord during trying times? We are blessed by an assurance of the presence and care of the Lord and there comes into the heart a new joy!

7 You have put gladness in my heart,
More than when their grain and new wine abound.
8 In peace I will both lie down and sleep,
For You alone, O Lord, make me to dwell in safety.

Sisters and Brothers, there is nothing taking place here that is out of God’s control. He is causing all things to work together for your good and mine. Let’s determine to rest in this age-old Psalm. Let’s remember, after all, it is the promise of the Word of God. Yes, trust in the Lord and let Him put gladness in your heart. May He bless us all as we learn to trust in His care,
