It appears that John is starting his letter with a reminder about faith. But faith is a maligned concept in the work today. Faith has become “a leap into the darkness”.
But the Bible never envisions us trusting in some vague promise that is not supported by evidence. Here John says he is relating something he saw with his eyes, he touched with his hands, he heard with his ears and experienced in his life. He wants you and me to trust in Jesus, not based on anything less than fact.
